Tonawanda Creek: July, 2005

This morning we paddled along Tonawanda Creek past Ship-n-Shore (not the canal part that goes to Lockport) for a total of about 7+ miles, from where Ransom Creek joins Tonawanda Creek to Transit Road. The group turned around at the shallow riffles that are not passable by kayak at the Transit Road bridge.

Tim and I investigated a split around what we thought may have been an island as we neared Transit Road, but instead was a meandering side stream that ended in a marshy area. Joan and Mary (and Teddy) paddled to the rocky area by Transit Road. The entire paddle was pretty, with overhanging trees and many weeping willows that drooped to the water. We saw a deer, the usual ducks and geese with their babies, yellow swamp iris and yellow water lilies in bloom. We also saw the Canal Corporation's tugboat "Lockport" and two large barges next to it near where the creek splits at Ship-n-Shore.

The sky was overcast all morning, but it never rained and was not windy. This was a pleasant paddle, mostly very natural-looking, with mirror-like water in some areas. Lots of pretty picture-taking opportunities.
