Real time Water Gauge for Tionesta Creek
Tionesta Creek: May 24, 2003
Put-in: Sheffield, PA
Take-out: Lynch
Length: 8 miles
Time: 2 ½ hours
Water Gauge: 3ft
This is a great springtime route that weaves in and out of the Allegheny National Forest. Since the pleasure of a trip depends on the water level, it is best to check it out before going or just not attempt it in dry seasons.
Sheffield was a great put-in at the center of town. As you turn off Route 6 onto Route 948, take a right at the first gas station. The launch is on your left. It even has restroom facilities.
The water level was perfect for our hearty group of 12 paddlers. The creek was 50' to 100' wide. The water ran clear and cold. The creek was flowing about 3 mph so the 8 miles of water were covered without too much exertion. There were no strainers to be concerned about. The one tricky spot to get around was navigated easily, even by the "newbie" in our flotilla. Linda had never kayaked before and she loved it! She handled the riffles and small waves enthusiastically.
The Canada geese guarded their tiny goslings as we floated by. Mallard moms kept their ducklings all in a row. Osprey and hawks glided overhead. The trees were all in their bright springtime green colors.
The take-out was at Lynch on Route 666, the second bridge on the creek.
