Real-time water gauge for Clarion River
Clarion River: June 9, 2003
Put-in: Portland Mills, PA
Take-out: Irwin
Length: 8 miles
Time: 2 ½ hours
Water Gauge: 4ft
The Clarion River is located in west central Pennsylvania. Approximately 110 miles long, it passes through the Allegheny National Forest and flows into the Allegheny River on its way to Pittsburgh.
We met in Ridgway, PA at Love's Canoe Rental . Dave has an obvious love for the area. Upon his recommendation we put in at Portland Mills and paddled an 8 mile stretch to Irwin. Check out Dave's recommended water levels.
This stretch of the Clarion is designated as a "Wild and Scenic River." It was fantastic! At a level of 4 feet, the flow was about 3 mph, so the trip could take about 2.5 hours. We were on the river for 5 hours because we came across so many nice spots to play in the waves. I think that we paddled upstream as much as we paddled downstream! A few of the paddlers in our group were new to surfing. After a little lesson on eddy turns, peel-outs, and surfing basics, they were having a great time discovering what their kayaks could do. One paddler also discovered the reason why I always dress for immersion! He handled his "baptism" well and was seen surfing the next set of waves.
There were many places to stop and enjoy a snack. The river ran freely with no threats from strainers or rock obstacles. This is truly a wonderful place to paddle. Enjoy it!
